Flames of War toernooi rondom de Dom 28 juni 2009
On June 28 Subcultures (desubc.ning.com) and the Blades of Destruction (www.bod-utrecht.nl) organized the third Flames of War tournament in Utrecht, the Netherlands. The tournament took place in the Subcultures shop that is located in one of the many cellars build between the 13th and 15th century in Utrecht along the canals that are also typical for many other Dutch cities.

We decided to go for late war 1500 points and 3 games of 2½ hours each. The first missions would be trench fight, after that the dice would decide and the players were allowed to reorganize their list using the linked mission rules. We used to Derby worlds scoring system that we scaled to fit 3 games and limited the total score of a draw to 8 points instead of 32 in order to stimulate decisive play. Although nobody used it in actual practice, we kept the cost for reorganization of combat platoons at the 5 points as in the rules.
A total of 12 players entered the competition and this resulted in a very good, enjoyable and interesting event. One of the tables was halve the size of a normal table so we build a bogage terrain on it, and allowed the players of the first mission to go for hold the line instead of trench fight. The trench fight proved tough for attackers to win but it was interesting to see how a number of players had organized their list for the duty at hand.
The final victory was for Eric Versleijen. Best painted army was that of Martin Schutten and most sporting players were Niek van der Laan and Jan Chris Plaggemars.

Flames of War rondom de Dom
Verslag van het Flames of War toernooi augustus 2008
On August 24 Subcultures (www.subcultures.nl) and the Blades of Destruction (www.bod-utrecht.nl) organized the first Flames of War tournament in Utrecht, the Netherlands. We decided to go for late war 1250 points and 3 games of 2½ hours each. The missions would be fixed and we chose: 1) Encounter, 2) Hold the Line and 3) Breakthrough. The main reason for the 1250 points is the relative newness of FoW in the Utrecht area in relation to the available amount of time per game. We also used to Derby worlds scoring system which we scaled to fit 3 games and limited the total score of a draw to 8 points instead of 32 in order to stimulate decisive play. The tournament took place in the Subcultures shop that is located in one of the many cellars build between the 13th and 15th century in Utrecht along the canals that are also typical for many other Dutch cities.
A total of 8 players entered the competition. Despite the size of the group it did cover most of the FoW landscape of the Netherlands, both in terms of geography as well as experience. In particular in the Arnhem area FoW is being played for already several years in Spelkwartier (www.spelkwartier.nl) while the Utrecht area has been active for just under one year, having been more focused on DBM and the likes, and the north of the Netherlands being intermediate in this respect. The result was a very good, enjoyable and interesting event. An event characterized by many new introductions of players that never met before as well as many long-time-no-seen meet and greets. The final victory was for Jan Vleer with a 1 point difference between him and runner-up René Hoevenberg.
| Rank | Player | Score |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Jan Vleer | 94 |
| 2 | René Hoevenberg | 93 |
| 3 | Frank Hakstege | 73 |
| 4 | Niek van der Laan | 63 |
| 5 | Eric Versleijen | 58 |
| 6 | Menzo Kwint | 51 |
| 7 | Gerco Blok | 48 |
| 8 | Martijn Waegemakers | 47 |
The best painted army resulted in 3 players (Menzo Kwint, Frank Hakstege and Gerco Blok) having the top score and best sportsman was Gerco Blok. It must be mentioned that in particular the differences between the players on sportsmanship were very small.
